Mercy: To keep our minds free of Prejudices

It is very easy to speak and write about Mercy but when it comes to practice and excercise many of us who are so called good don't come forward. Sometimes mercy is marred with a lot of prejudices about another. We have certain fixed opinions about certain individuals, places, persons and nations. We just write them off. They are given a tag and name which does not get canceled. We carry all along with us. Our relationships and connections are based on prejudices that we have about these persons. Our dealing sometimes with these people is so inhuman that one feels nauseating about the whole affair. One wonders why these kind of measures we use in order to relate to others. When these people commit something wrong it is not easily forgiven or shown mercy to them. Prejudices can really bring the whole tone of our behavior down. We just go by fixed ideas and customs.
I remember an incident about someone who studied with me in the college way way 1981. This guy an intelligent fellow and smart in everything. But in the Class he was not appreciated because he came from a particular community which has some bad past. The students in the class knew about it and they just kept him at a distance. The relationship was limited to hi and bye, that's all. But he did not mind about it. He did well in his studies and the professors were happy with his performance. He stood always first.
An eventful and unforgettable day in the life of this young man. He was riding a his motorcycle and got involved in an ancient. It was not his mistake but the other one. It was very clear and the bystanders and onlookers did say that. Before the police could arrive the people who knew that he came from that particular community. They got furious and wanted to settle scores with him. He beat him black and blue. Most of the college friends were all there but no one them came forward to help. Because of prejudices he got beatings. No mercy and compassion was shown. He could have been saved from all the trouble if prejudices were removed from the minds.
It takes not time to destroy a person with our attitudes and behavior. With our words and gestures. Because the other one does not belong to my standard and class we look down upon. We forget all the good that person does. All the goodness and talents of those persons. Sometimes these people could be useful for our society but prejuidices kills everything. If mercy and compassion shown, be sure many positive things can happen. The world and society changes to be a little better.
